I would highly recommend the Escolania, they were the best choir of the Nuremburg festival, and to keep this on topic for the thread, even Scott Price thought so! He even included their best song Ave Maria (Schubert/Vivancos) in the recent CVMS concert!

I don't know, it's a nice song, but I've heard better stuff from the group. The MacMillan "Miserere" was more memorable for me personally.

I just finished watching this incredible concert. All of the current Libera students (11?) participated, plus the former member. The video was choppy but fortunately the audio was excellent.

I only started watching/listening to it. You must have missed someone, at least, I spotted 17 boys either Libera members or former members, though at least one is not very known as a former member. I say current members are 12, at least.

I was fortunate enough to attend the Mahler 8 concert at the RAH (sorry for the length of time this post has taken to appear – I stayed on in London to see a couple of other concerts which fortuitously coincided with the Mahler, but which would be way too far off topic to discuss here). A glorious way to spend a stormy autumn afternoon, and worth the 2½-year wait; I bought my ticket for it back in early 2020, when the performance was still scheduled for October that year.

This was only the second Mahler 8 I've heard live, and the first to have the sheer scale required to do the work justice. From my perch in the side stalls (a good place to be in the RAH – close to the action, clear sound, and with enough height to see the whole stage) – it sounded magnificent. The CVMS and Tiffin boys did themselves proud; the different timbre of the boys' choir was instantly recognisable, and despite being relatively small compared to the other choral and orchestral forces they had no difficulty in making themselves heard.

The concert was being recorded – there was an array of microphones on stage, and a couple of cameras – but I don't know what for; there was no mention of it in the programme and I couldn't find anything on the RPO site.

A word to the wise: if you're attending a concert at the RAH, buy a programme voucher beforehand if you can. I missed the programme stall on the way in, and when I went back to get one they had run out, except for a few which they were saving for people with vouchers. There were about a dozen of the voucherless in the queue, and they told us to wait while they searched the building to see if any programmes had fallen down the back of a sofa or something. About seven minutes before the scheduled start time, someone appeared with a whole stack of them, which they seemed reluctant to sell to us as they had just started encouraging us to go into the hall and take our seats. Mahler 8 is one work where a programme is a necessity to follow the long and complex Latin and German texts, so naturally I stood my ground and got one.

I took this snap before the start; the CVMS boys aren't very visible in it as they were seated behind the Tiffin contingent. The usual faces were present and correct, though.

The Schola Cantorum of The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School sing their annual performance of Handel's great choral masterpiece, accompanied by leading period instrument ensemble St James' Baroque. All solos are sung by the boys of the choir.

Well done to Malakai for his solo efforts at this performance but some mentally deranged idiot in the audience wanted his 5 mins of relevance and this top trended on BBC online...

Malakai is an excellent singer I have heard him sing solos a few times, and I even heard him at the ROH in The Magic Flute. Even if he had sung badly, (and according to the reviews he sang very well) there is no excuse for such heckling!

Malakai has been one of the outstanding soloists at CVMS in the last few years, I had the opportunity to chat to his mother at a concert once and I told her then I thought he was a fantastic singer.

The occasions where heckling is warranted are rare. When a performance has been dreadful, I have just walked out, I have never considered vocalising that. As for heckling a child... that is just the behaviour of a self-centred, ill-mannered and entitled prick.

Apparently he was 'protesting' that the part wasn't being sung by an adult female soprano rather than anything related to Malakai. Of course it is so insensitive and appalling to call out at a 12 y.o. singing at the ROH that one has to wonder at the person's mental state; Malakai is obviously made of strong stuff that he was able to carry on with his part and not be phased. I understand that he received a very warm reaction from the rest of the audience after he finished the song and rightly so.

Ironically, the part was written by Handel specifically for a boy to sing
