Actually that song was originally written in German by the famous British crooner Engelbert Humperdinck, who is more famous for "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "Release Me", and "There Goes My Everything?.

I was in the choir at my university last year, and we sang that song in German also. It wasn't that same version - it was a 3-part version for women's choir - but it turned out pretty nicely.

You do know that half of that is a joke? Engelbert Humperdink was a German composer of the 19th century, Hansel and Gretel is his best known work. A 1960's British crooner named Arthur Dorsey took the name for a stage name.Sue wrote:That's very interesting Tully, I didn't know so farTullyBascombe wrote:Actually that song was originally written in German by the famous British crooner Engelbert Humperdinck, who is more famous for "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "Release Me", and "There Goes My Everything?.

A little recommendation from good old Germany:
'Die Chorjungen' ( = the choirboys ) Nico, Jan and Georg are part of the 'Augsburger Domsingknaben' (in english it maybe mean the Augsburg cathedral boyschoir). But in 2014 they released their first (own) album.
Listen to samples here
for videos here (singing 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA for queen Silvia of Sweden)

Today in the Netherlands we remember those who died in WWII and in every armed conflict in the world since.
It is sometimes said nowadays that the youth is less interested in knowing about WWII because it's so long ago already.
This song proves otherwise.
It's a song about Anne Frank and her diary. As some of you may know she wrote in it as if she were writing to an imaginary friend who she called Kitty.
I think it's touching that a young group like this writes such a moving and catchy song about such a serious topic.

I've started reading the diary recently, I had never actually gotten round to it before. It's just incredible.

That's an interesting guitar accompaniment. Am I hearing a 12 string in the background?

I've never read Anne Frank's diary. I really should. Cool song, BTW.

In a short clip of a live performance of this song yesterday there were two 6-string guitars playedTullyBascombe wrote:That's an interesting guitar accompaniment. Am I hearing a 12 string in the background?
I can really recommend it. Even though I'm now more than twice the age she was when she wrote it, I find it captivating.alcesalcesobservator wrote:I've never read Anne Frank's diary. I really should. Cool song, BTW.

Hope you all can appreciate this. Even if it's only to broaden your horizon.
I only just realised it ties in with my previous posts about a song dedicated to Anne Frank.
I do have a fascination with WWII as well as with Judaism, but both are for different reasons.
Btw I don't intend to discuss politics on this forum, and I hope you will respect that.
The longing that you can hear in this song strikes a chord for everyone, I think.

So excited - going to see Paul McCartney tonight!!
I've loved the Beatles since I first heard them in my childhood. Never seen one of them perform live though.
It's quite a coincidence because I have been listening to the Beatles a lot recently and just the other day I thought to myself: if Paul McCartney ever performs again in the Netherlands I would like to go - and then yesterday almost by accident I found out he was playing that day and today - and there were a couple of tickets left!

Re: Other Choirs, Singers, Musicians that you like
It was... amazing. One of the best nights of my life.
I grew up with the Beatles and he played so many Beatle songs, so there were a lot of emotions involved (that is: big smiles and a few tears). But not only that, he played so full of energy and fun. Almost three hours, great show, also visually, and he has a great band with a lot of enthusiasm. Just wow.
People do say his voice is not as good anymore, well, he's over 70, but he still sings pretty well. And you can tell he really enjoys rocking out as much as he did when he was 50 years younger. Actually I can't think of anything bad to say about the whole show. Just the best.
