Percussion

Just wondered if there are any Libera fans interested in percussion. I have been sort of fascinated with it since an early age but never ventured into playing any kind of percussion instrument myself. Though not anymore! I had my first drum lesson yesterday :) I'm now practicing eighth notes on a practice pad. It feels really good to have taken this first small step.
My drum teacher also leads the percussion group of a concert band which I hope to join once I get more experience.

Music like this has been on my musical radar every now and then and I'm finally allowing it more room in my life. It's great to do so :)

Interesting. Was that some sort of combined band of the British Commonwealth? I wonder who the oriental lady bagpipe players were?

It turns out they are the "Vanda Miss Joaquim Pipe Band Singapur".

Hooray for first lessons! I like a bit of percussion myself, and I like this piece. Good luck!

The conductor is hilarious. Looks more like he's directing traffic.

He's German, as is the drummer boy and the others dressed as Scots.

Haha, Directing traffic. Yes!

But they are good though.

It probably feels a bit like directing traffic in front of so many people :) Amazing actually that they all see him well enough to give a great performance like that.

When it comes to percussion I have to point out these guys, the Top Secret Drum Corps from Switzerland. Their performances are mindblowing. And they actually all have day jobs - they're just crazy about drumming! :) I could watch this over and over again.

We're rehearsing this song with our percussion group :) Couldn't find a version of the percussion arrangement so just the original. Imagine in your head timpani, xylophone, beatring, cowbells, drums and such!

I couldn't resist a little levity. Perhaps we non-percussionists would have a little better chance at being a part of this type of group!

(Tim the Tool-man Taylor would love it.)

Weren't you supposed to be entering a monastic order or something?

Hello Tully,

Yes, I joined a franciscan community late 2013. But for personal reasons I left them again this February. I'm living in my current apartment since March, in a new town. Here, I joined the percussion group I mentioned. My calling for religious life is something I am still sorting out. In the meantime, making new experiences in music is part of my life journey! :)

Ah! That explains why you've been doing some un-monklike activities recently.

I've just come across this thread and only wanted to leave the message that I love percussion, would also love to play something of it properly! A few weeks ago I started to take conga lessons, because I have to play it in our choir's concert in September, and it scares me a bit  ...

We certainly wish you the best of luck, Maartendas and filiarheni!.

I hope you can enjoy yourself even half as much as this youngster. Many times these younger musicians can be an inspiration to us all (just like Libera!)
