Kubo and the Two Strings (Libera involvement)

Post by JimmyRiddle »

It appears Libera's voices have been used in the soundtrack to the recently released animated film 'Kubo and The Two Strings'.

Initially these three links credit Libera & Robert Prizeman;

...but it wasn't until I saw this press release PDF (in french) that provided me with greater confidence that it is Libera. (see page 43)

The soundtrack was composed by italian composer Dario Marianelli and was recorded at Air Lyndhurst Studio in April 2016.
There is also another (adult) choir "DoubleFvoices" who are credited on the soundtrack, and female Soprano Melanie Pappenheim.

The full soundtrack at present is on YouTube..

Kubo two strings

To the best of my basic listening skills I think there is a possibility of Libera being heard at these time-marks

10:28-10:40
14:20-14:30
22:56;
23:30-23:39 (Libera & doublefvoices?)
45:07-46:00 (more likely a boys choir towards the end of passage)

If it is them, they have been used very sparingly with a few oooh's and aaaah's throughout but I'd like to know for sure because it's still another one in the achievement bag. The film (stop-frame animation) has gathered momentum after a slow start and achieved very positive reviews.

These films are painstaking to make and why I favour them over other types of animation.

Libera have also been used in the theme song; a cover of George Harrison's 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' sung by Regina Spektor.
the Asian instruments carry the song through, and then this orchestra sweeps in and then there’s this boys’ choir that comes in at the very end.
Again I wasn't sure as It could be any boys choir to be fair, but the clincher was signed sealed and delivered with this clip on YouTube (see 03:20)

The contributions Libera make might not be as intensive and fulfilling as the way Mark Mckenzie utilised them to great effect for 'The Greatest Miracle' ..(the amazing Benedictus Deus) but it is always a bonus for them to be involved in a major film release. Another feather to Libera's remarkable bow.

Thanks for pointing this out! Even without the Libera connection this looks like a really cool movie and the song sounds great. It would have made Sir George Martin proud :)

P.S.: I agree about stop motion animation, it's amazing.

Who says Libera can't do contemporary music?
