Re: Young Chorister of the Year
The 2023 competition is taking place now, with the details of winners kept secret until it airs in December. A new format this time, with the separate boy and girl semi-finals replaced by junior and senior contests. I'm not sure that's a good idea but we can still enjoy performances even if the cont...

Re: Schola Cantorum
An interview with Scott Price here, which I don't think has been posted yet:
Interesting hearing about the range of abilities in the choir but how keen most of them are to do solos.

Re: Schola Cantorum
He features on James O'Donnell's last album with the abbey choir, due out shortly: https://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dc.asp?dc=D_CDA68420 Thanks for letting me know, I'll definitely be getting that. Freddie Ursell Beer and Benji Rimington were also great trebles. I heard all three in the St John P...

Re: Schola Cantorum
Thanks for sharing, its interesting to hear him from not long after he left the abbey. He sang the solo in Britten's Te Deum in C at the Duke of Edinburgh's live televised memorial service earlier last year. This is just a couple of weeks before I heard him in the abbey's performance of the Montever...

Re: Schola Cantorum
Sometimes I might be inclined to take what trebles say with a pinch of salt. I believe the LOS and CVMS trebles have the same singing teacher - Anita Morrison who also teaches St John's Cambridge and for many years prior trained the trebles of Westminster Cathedral. I couldn't imagine her &quo...

Re: Schola Cantorum
Thanks for your thoughts, interesting to hear about that second choir, there is certainly a lot of variation in how this work is recorded and performed compared to say the common Bach oratorios. I know of Nicholas Mulroy but am yet to hear him in concert, so I'll keep an eye out. I remember hearing ...

Re: Schola Cantorum
I don't suppose anyone attended their Monteverdi Vespers concert a couple of weeks back and also attended the Monteverdi Vespers concert by the other London Catholic state school boys choir last night, and would be able to compare the two? I wanted to attend both but unfortunately had to miss the CV...

Re: Opera
I think it was clear all along that Aksel thrived on oratorio and operatic arias. Imagine if his debut album had given us Pie Jesu and O for the Wings of a Dove instead of Oh! Had I Jubal's lyre and Happy, oh thrice happy we. I think his talents would have been terribly wasted by sticking to the usu...

Re: Luca Brugnoli
I think Luca was the clear winner of this round with Sam not far behind. I guess his experience with Libera was a big help - for some entrants it was probably their first time singing on stage with all the lights and cameras which can be quite intimidating. I must say I thought Charlie gave a better...

Re: Les Petits Chanteurs de Nogent-sur-Marne - Les Moineaux du Val de Marne
Les Petits Chanteurs de Nogent-sur-Marne - Les Moineaux du Val de Marne The boys choir of Nogent-sur-Marne also known as The Sparrows of the Val de Marne not to be confused with the Les Petits Chanteurs of other French places  I am asking because I wonder if anyone perhaps has one of their al...

Re: St John's Smith SQ Concert 2022 - Dec 4th
Thanks for the info, I am doing wabbey the day before so not sure if I'll go for this or not yet. I guess one benefit of no reserved seating though is that you can wait until much nearer the time to decide to buy tickets.

Re: St John's Smith SQ Concert 2022 - Dec 4th
I am tempted by CVMS Messiah but unreserved seating puts me off - I just assume I'll travel all the way there to end up behind a pillar at the back.
